Dry Cleaning Is Not A Thing Of The Past

In past decades, dry cleaning was a part of everyday life. Just like you would need to go to the grocery store on a regular basis, you would also expect that you were going to have to make a trip to the dry cleaner in order to drop off or pick up dress shirts, suits, pants or anything else that was not meant to be put through the washer. This would include almost everything that wasn’t “casual” because these types of garments were not designed to be soaked in water and then dried in a machine. The dry cleaner uses a process to remove dirt and stains from these garments without soaking them in water, then presses them to remove all wrinkles and keep them looking sharp and crisp. This look was expected in most professional workplaces and any gathering that was anything more than formal. It was even common in the past for many men to wear suits around the house!
It has become less of a necessity in recent years as there has been more of a shirt toward a casual environment at work, in addition to many suits being made from materials which can actually be washed and tumbled dry. This does not negate the need for dry cleaning of better materials and dress clothes in order to maintain a clean and sharp look. For example, a man’s suit cannot be put into the washer if it is to remain looking good, and you only have the ability to wear the pants of a suit a few times before they are going to need to be cleaned. The jacket of a suit will become wrinkled after wearing it only once, and these types of cleanings and pressings can only be done using a dry cleaner if the fabric is to remain in good shape. If you were to attempt to press the suit with an iron, you run the risk of sightly melting the fabric and causing shiney spots that will give you an unkempt look.
Dress shirts need to be dry cleaned in order to remain looking good. Although there are now dress shirts that can be washed in a traditional way, they will never have the crisp collar and pressed look that a dry cleaner can give to them. For this reason, any man who wears a dress shirt or a suit regularly at work or to go out should familiarize themselves with the nearest dry cleaner to their home or place of work. Many dry cleaners will actually offer free pickup and delivery of items within a certain distance from their store in order to minimize the inconvenience of dropping your clothing off.
In many cases, people who do not have the time to go to a laundromat or have access to a washer and dryer in their homes will simply take all dirty laundry to the dry cleaners in order to have it cleaned. This convenience is worth the minimal amount of money it costs for the service.
